Resident Services Program
at Roll Hill – A Village of Support for Residents

Wallick Communities’ Villages at Roll Hill is aptly named. To quote the African proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child,” the resident services program provides a village worth of programs and services for Roll Hill residents. They have a higher quality life at this Cincinnati community thanks to Resident Services Director Lisa Hyde-Hill and her volunteers.

New Name.
Same great company.

The Wallick Companies’ umbrella brand is now Wallick Communities. While many in
the affordable housing industry know what the company does, many more people do not.
The updated name of Wallick Communities is clearer and more descriptive. It also more accurately describes who we serve – residents who live in
our communities.

If you were to stop by the Roll Hill Community Center on any given day, you’d see Lisa and 5 to 15 volunteers busy. They might be preparing brown bag meals for children, sorting items for the free clothes closet or sorting donated produce and baked goods. It is not an ordinary place.

Services available to residents at the community center include:

  • Food pantry sponsored by St. Catharine's Church
  • Free fresh produce on Mondays sponsored by Vineyard Community Church
  • Free bread and sweets three days a week sponsored by Kroger
  • Free transportation for seniors
  • Computer lab time three days a week
  • Free clothes closet for women and men
  • GED program and other distance learning opportunities four days a week
  • Listening support group for women twice a month
  • Healthy Moms and Babes program, which includes pregnancy testing, setting up doctor’s visits and information on what to expect over the course of a pregnancy
  • Prenatal education program
  • Parenting skills classes sponsored by Healthy Moms and Babes
  • Home visiting program for new parents sponsored by Healthy Moms and Babes
  • Free HIV/AIDS testing twice a month sponsored by the City of Cincinnati’s Health Department

There also is a full range of programs and services for residents’ children of all ages:

  • Computer lab specifically for children twice
    a week
  • Monthly book of the month club
  • Life skills program for girls ages 7-16
  • Big Brothers program on Saturdays through
St. Xavier for boys ages 8-12
  • Summer cooling program location through
the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
sponsored by Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency

Additionally, Hyde-Hill meets with new residents personally to welcome them, share information and offer a welcome gift of home cleaning supplies. The community’s monthly newsletter also keeps residents informed and updated.

Through the Roll Hill community center a separate, unaffiliated non-profit organization, Childhood Food Solutions, distributes about 1,000 weekend meals to children who live at Roll Hill. An additional 3,000 weekend meals are distributed by Childhood Food Solutions to students at five Cincinnati elementary schools.

“We know that when children have breakfast they perform better in school. There’s a direct and proven connection between nutritious meals and academic success,” said Hyde-Hill.

“The majority of residents at Roll Hill, and at our other family communities, are single mothers and their children. Education and outreach will help them break out of the cycle of generational poverty that so many experience,” said Wallick Communities CEO Tom Feusse. “Lisa and her team of volunteers are a best practice model for our other communities to emulate.”

In addition to volunteer residents, Hyde-Hill has recruited volunteers from nearby churches, schools, partnering non-profits and local businesses. Individuals also donate their time and talent to support and assist residents.

Wallick Communities and its resident services program are working to replicate Roll Hill’s programming and services at its other family apartment communities around the Midwest.
